Feb 13, 2023 | Newborn Photography

Finding the right London newborn photographer is an important task for new parents. You want to ensure that the photographer you choose is able to capture those special moments of your baby’s early days and provide you with beautiful, lasting memories. Doing a quick Google search for London Newborn Photographer returns literally hundreds of results offering different services – studio, at home, props, no props. How are you going to find your newborn photographer? Read on for my top questions to ask your photographer to help you find the perfect fit.

1. As a London Newborn Photographer, what is your photography style?

It’s important to know the photographer’s style and see if it aligns with your expectations. Does the photographer offer studio sessions or do they specialise in more candid in-home photography? Do they pose the baby or are they led by the baby and what seems most natural? Do they photoshop images or do they celebrate just how baby was in the moment?

Offering in home lifestyle sessions, I prefer a natural, candid approach. This means there won’t be any props or putting baby into specific poses, but instead I follow “baby led posing” – we do what your little love wants to do. Make sure the photographer’s style fits what you’re looking for.

2. When is the best time to photograph newborns?

The short answer: whenever suits your family best. Traditionally, many photographers may say that the first 14 days are best to take newborn images. This is usually because baby is most sleepy during this time and easier to put into certain “poses”. However, there is no need to do this if you are after lifestyle images.

Taking photos during the first month does help capture the typical newborn details: the little wrinkles and creases, all the yawns and sleepy cuddles. But as a mother myself, I know first hand that dressing up for photographs after you’ve just returned from hospital might not be the first thing on your mind.

As a London newborn photographer, I am always flexible and will therefore work with a timing that suits your family best. Anywhere in the first four to five weeks will still be lovely and just give you a little bit more time to settle in as a family. In terms of booking, I recommend reaching out in your last trimester. Have a look at this post for more information about timing.

3. What should we wear for our newborn photoshoot?

As with any photoshoot, it’s important to feel like yourself, and not feel like you’re dressing in a way you usually wouldn’t. I recommend light colours, loose styles, and no big patterns as they can be distracting from the images. Think a flowy dress (neutral colour or small floral pattern) for summer shoots or a lovely chunky knit for the colder season.

You can also keep it simple but elegant with a pair of blue jeans and a white shirt, accessorised with a few select pieces of jewellery.

For your littlest one, you might like to alternate between 2-3 different options, e.g. swaddled, or just in a little diaper & a bloomer on top, or a full outfit. Either way, think simplicity as it will be much easier on you and your little one. Feel free to take a picture of your outfits and send them across to me to help with styling. Also have a look at this post to read more about what to wear for your newborn photoshoot.

4. As a London newborn photographer, where do you take the photos?

As your baby is so little, I recommend taking newborn portraits at home. Everyone will be at there most relaxed, no harsh studio light, and you have everything you need to hand. As a London Newborn Photographer, I love doing in-home lifestyle sessions – all we need are a couple of windows for natural light, and a few corners of your home (nursery, your bedroom etc). Please don’t worry about it needing to look spotless and perfect, I won’t need much space at all!

5. What is included in your photo package?

You can read more about your experience here. Once you’re booked in, we will connect to chat about styling and outfits, and I’ll be on hand for any questions until our shoot date. After we meet, you will receive a few sneak previews within 48 hours, and an online gallery around 3 weeks after the shoot. Galleries will typically include 50+ carefully edited, high resolution images, all of which are yours to keep. Contact me to receive my session & pricing guide for more details.

6. What is your policy on rescheduling?

As your London newborn photographer, I completely understand that life is busy as you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy or once you’ve already welcomed your little one. If we have to reschedule because you are unwell, please give me as much advance notice as possible and we will find another suitable date together.
